When planning what to wear for your maternity portrait session, there are a few things to keep in mind: Show off your bump: Maternity portrait sessions are all about celebrating your pregnancy and the new addition to your family. So, choose clothing that will show off your baby bump. A fitted dress or a top that accentuates your bump can be a great option. Comfort: Comfort is key during pregnancy, so make sure to choose clothing that you feel comfortable and confident wearing. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive. *Quick tip!* Wear a maternity body suit under your clothing to help shape your body and look more flattering. Colors: Choose colors that complement your skin tone and hair color. Neutral and soft colors such as white, cream, or pastels can be a great choice, but you can also play with different shades of your favorite color. Textures: Textures can add depth and interest to the photos. Consider incorporating different textures in your clothing, such as a lace dress or a flowy fabric. Accessories: Accessories such as jewelry, scarves, or hats can add a personal touch to the photos and help complete your look. Layers: Layers can add dimension and interest to the photos. Consider incorporating layers in your clothing, such as a cardigan or a scarf Here's a sample of the clothing I have in my client closet for you to choose from when you book a maternity session with me. I do maternity sessions at outdoor locations around Utah County or in my home studio in Springville, Utah. It is generally recommended to book a maternity portrait session between 28-36 weeks of pregnancy, as this is when the baby bump is most prominent and the mother is likely to feel the most comfortable. This also allows for enough time to schedule the session and make any necessary arrangements before the baby is born. However, it ultimately depends on individual preference and the availability of your photographer. This was a brief topic this week so I've decided to give you a little bonus question on how to choose a great photographer for documenting your pregnancy with portraiture.
What are some questions a pregnant mom should ask when booking a photographer for a maternity session?

Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions I receive about maternity portrait photography. I am a photographer in Utah County; let me know in the comment section if you have any additional questions. When is the best time to schedule a maternity photography session? The best time to schedule a maternity photography session is typically between 28-36 weeks of pregnancy, when the belly is visibly round and the baby bump is prominent. What should I wear for the session? It's best to wear comfortable and fitted clothing that accentuates your baby bump. Avoid clothing with large logos or patterns as they can be distracting in the photographs. You can also bring a variety of outfits, or a special dress or piece of jewelry to incorporate into the shoot. I have more information in my maternity client prep guide which goes out to you before the session takes place. Can my partner and other children be included in the session? Yes, many families choose to include their partner and other children in the maternity photography session. It's a great way to capture the special bond between the expecting parents and their children. Can I bring props to the session? Yes, you can bring props to the session such as a special blanket, a piece of jewelry, or any other meaningful items to incorporate into the photos. How long does a maternity session typically last? A maternity session typically lasts around one hour, depending on the needs of the family. The photographer will work with you to ensure that enough time is allocated to capture all the important moments and details of your pregnancy. Will you pose me? I as the photographer will guide you through poses to accentuate your beautiful baby bump, but I will also capture a few candid and natural moments throughout the session as they present. You can also request specific poses or ideas that you would like to try. Is the session indoors or outdoors? Primarily I photograph my maternity portrait sessions in an outdoor location such as a park, garden, or even downtown cityscape. Outdoor locations can provide a beautiful natural lighting and unique background for the photographs. But we can also discuss doing the session indoors either at your home or at a locally rented photography studio (my preferred studios are in Springville and Highland, Utah) if you prefer. How will I receive the photos?
About 4-6 weeks after your session you will receive a link to your online gallery with the watermarked images from your session. After you make your purchase you will receive an email link to download your digital images. You can also order prints and other products through the gallery as well as share the images with friends and family. What should I expect after the session? After the session, the photographer will select the best images and edit them to perfection. The images will then be linked via online gallery to you along with instructions on how to place your order. You can also order prints and other products through our online ordering system. This is the introduction to a six part series on Maternity Portrait Fashion 101.
A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to create a comprehensive guide for choosing what to wear at a maternity portrait session. I wanted to put in all of the basics of fashion and design into the guide. I had originally planned on this guide existing as one blog post with helpful tips and outlined simply but in the time I have been creating the guide it has exploded with all types of information that is all so helpful. So to make everything as clear and concise as possible I'm going to break it up into more manageable sections (and post in reverse order just so it's easy to read as you scroll). This guide will mainly cover more elegant or semi-formal wear. I have tried to make sure to stick to explaining the basic concepts as simply as I was able in a blog series. Enjoy! Here's the rundown of what to expect. Click the link to access the post: Part 1: Body Type - the basics on how to determine your body type. Part 2: Dress Line - different styles of dress lines and which ones are best for each body type. Bonus gown style examples. Part 3: Neck Line - different styles of neck lines and which ones are best for each body type. Bonus gown style examples. Part 4: Sleeve Type - different styles of sleeve types and which ones are best for each body type. Bonus gown style examples. Part 5: Color - the basics of color mixing and which colors to wear based on the seasons. Part 6: Accessories - extras to wear with your outfit or have in your maternity portrait.
