Did you know August is National Immunization Awareness Month?
As a newborn photographer it is very important to me that I take every possible precaution to ensure the safety of the babies and young children that I photograph. All of my vaccinations are up to date and I always get a yearly flu shot. I believe vaccines help to protect the most vulnerable among us: those that are very young, very old, or someone with any type of immunosuppression. For more information on how vaccines save lives or to learn how you can spread awareness of the importance of being immunized check out the CDC's page on National Immunization Awareness Month.

Did you know that August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month? The first week of August is also International Breastfeeding week. It's an extra special time this year because recently laws were passed that made it so that it is legal to breastfeed in public in all fifty United States. Hooray!
Breastfeeding is so important for many reasons. You can read more about the benefits at the CDC's website. It's also very important to get the support you need. According to the CDC: "Most mothers want to breastfeed but stop early due to a lack of ongoing support." I also believe a good support system is vital in breastfeeding success. I would be happy to contribute to your support group as I can share any of my experiences with you especially if it helps you overcome any breastfeeding problems. Although I have no training either medical or as a doula or lactation consultant, I still have my own breastfeeding experiences with my three children to lean on. Between the three of them I have breastfed for a combined 40 months! I hope I can offer support to any moms that will work with me through my experiences. For example, I know what it's like to struggle with many common breastfeeding issues: poor latch, cracked nipples, low supply, having a baby with food sensitivities, a nursing strike, and feeling shame when breastfeeding uncovered in public as well as learning to overcome that shame. If you would like more information these are some resources that I found invaluable during my breastfeeding years: La Leche League and Kelly Mom. You can also find loads of supportive mommy groups on Facebook and Baby Center. |
