It is best to book newborn photos within the first two weeks after birth. This is because babies are most sleepy and pliable during this time, making it easier to achieve the adorable, curled-up poses that are typical of newborn photography. Additionally, the earlier in the baby's life that the photos are taken, the less chance there is of the baby developing any blemishes or baby acne, which can be distracting in photographs. If the mother is breastfeeding it is usually best to wait for the milk to come in so that baby has a full tummy; alternatively you can supplement formula if the mother's milk has not yet come in. It's important to book your newborn photography session in advance (ideally during pregnancy) so that the photographer can reserve a spot for you and be prepared for the session. This way, you don't have to worry about finding a photographer after the baby is born and can focus on the most important thing, your new baby. Booking this early can also create an opportunity for you and your photographer to get to know each other's personalities so you can be more friendly when you do meet for the session. It's also important to keep in mind that the photographer's schedule may fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons such as Fall time for family photos or late Spring and early Summer for weddings, so it's a good idea to book your session well in advance to secure your spot and avoid disappointment.

As a seasoned newborn photographer and a proud mother to four beautiful children, I've had the privilege of witnessing the incredible journey that new mothers embark on. From the first moments of holding their precious newborns to navigating the joys and challenges of motherhood, one thing remains constant – the need for essential tools and support. In this blog post, I'll draw from both my experience as a newborn photographer and my own adventures in motherhood to share valuable insights into the must-have essentials for new moms. Whether you're a first-time mom or adding to your growing family, these essentials will help make your transition into motherhood a little smoother.
Wear: Diapers and wipes: You'll need plenty of these! Newborns can go through 8-12 diapers a day. Clothing: Onesies, sleepers, and other comfortable clothing items will keep your baby cozy and warm. Swaddles and blankets: Swaddling can help your baby feel secure and sleep better. Soft blankets are also useful for cuddling and tummy time. Feed & Clean: Breastfeeding: If you're breastfeeding, you'll need nursing bras, pads, and a breast pump. Get some bottles and nipples to go with the breast pump. Bottle-feeding: If you're bottle-feeding, you'll need bottles, nipples, and formula. Baby bathtub: A small bathtub or bath seat can make bath time easier and safer. Outings: Car seat: You'll need a car seat for your baby's first ride home from the hospital. Get help from a car seat technician to ensure it's installed properly. Baby carrier or wrap: A carrier or wrap can help you keep your baby close and your hands free. Babies love being close to their caregivers. Diaper bag: A good diaper bag can help you stay organized and prepared when you're on the go. Safe & Soothe: Baby monitor: A baby monitor can give you peace of mind while your baby sleeps. Pacifiers: Pacifiers can soothe a fussy baby and help with sleep. Remember, every baby is different, and you may find that you need additional items depending on your baby's needs. In the whirlwind of new motherhood, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. However, with the right essentials and a supportive community, you can navigate this incredible journey with confidence and grace. As both a newborn photographer and a mother, I've seen the magic that unfolds in those precious early moments with your little one. So, remember to savor every snuggle, capture those unforgettable smiles, and cherish the love that fills your home. Are you expecting or a new mom looking to capture the beauty of these early moments with your newborn?
