What is lifestyle newborn photography? Lifestyle newborn photography is a type of photography that captures candid and natural moments of a newborn and their family in their own home. It is focused on capturing the everyday interactions, emotions and connections between the family members in a natural and unposed way. What should we wear for the session? For lifestyle newborn photography, it's best to wear comfortable, casual clothing that you feel good in. Avoid clothing with large logos or patterns as they can be distracting in the photographs. It's also a good idea to coordinate colors among family members, but not necessarily match exactly. How long does a lifestyle newborn session typically last? A lifestyle newborn session typically lasts between 2-3 hours, depending on the needs of the family. I as the photographer will work with you to ensure that enough time is allocated to capture all the important moments and details of your family's new addition. Will you pose us?
The focus of lifestyle newborn photography is capturing candid and natural moments, so there will be minimal posing. I will guide you through natural interactions and prompts, but the focus will be on capturing the real-life moments of your new family. Should we clean our home before the session? While it's not necessary to have your home perfectly cleaned before the session, it's a good idea to tidy up and remove any clutter. This would be a great opportunity to hire a house cleaner. I will work with what is available and will be able to capture beautiful and meaningful images regardless of the tidiness of your home. Can we include our pets in the session? Yes, many families choose to include their pets in the lifestyle newborn session. If you would like to include your pets, please let me know in advance so I can plan accordingly. How will we receive the photos? I will provide you first with a slideshow to view your images which allows you to relive the emotions of our session together. Afterwards you will receive a link to a digital gallery of the images from your session, which can be downloaded and shared with friends and family. You will also receive print credit to order prints and other products through the online ordering system. What should we expect after the session? After the session, I will select the best images and edit them to perfection. After about four weeks the images will then be delivered to you in a digital format, along with instructions on how to download them and print them.

There are many myths or misconceptions that I hear about newborn photography that I hear when I tell people what I do for a living. Here's a few of the most common things I hear or am asked as well as my response to what is realistic. "Newborns should be asleep for the best photos": While it's true that newborns can be easier to photograph when they are asleep, it's not necessary for them to be asleep for the entire session. Many newborns are more content when they are awake and can be captured in a variety of poses and expressions. "Newborns should be posed in unrealistic positions": Some photographers may pose newborns in unrealistic positions that may look cute but can be uncomfortable for the baby, one of the worst offenders being the "froggy pose". It's important to make sure the baby is comfortable and above all safe in any position they are placed in. "Newborn photography requires a lot of props": While props can be fun and add interest to a photograph, they are not necessary for a successful newborn photography session. Simple and natural poses and settings often result in the most timeless and beautiful photographs. I have a wide selection of timeless outfits and backdrops to suit a variety of needs. "You need to capture the baby's first week of life": It's not necessary to rush to capture newborn photographs within the first week of life. Newborns change quickly, and it's better to wait until the baby is settled and comfortable before scheduling a session. I think it's particularly important to at least wait until the mother's milk has come in for a breastfed baby. I recommend portraits take place between 5-14 days old but if you happen to miss that ideal window we can still do newborn photos with certain limitations up to six weeks old. Please contact me for more details. "Newborn photography is expensive": While it's true that some photographers may charge a premium for newborn photography, it's not always necessary to spend a lot of money to get beautiful photographs. It's important to research different photographers and find one that fits your budget and style. I try to aim for the lower end of luxury; my clients typically spend around $1000-1500 on portraiture, which includes digital images and printed products such as albums, framed art, and more. "Newborn photography is easy": Newborn photography can be quite challenging, requiring a lot of patience, skill, and knowledge. Photographers need to be aware of the safety and comfort of the baby, as well as have a good understanding of lighting and posing. I have spent years learning all about posing and safety when it comes to photographing these fragile precious babies. "Photographers use Photoshop to make babies look perfect":
While some photographers may use Photoshop to edit photographs, it's important to remember that newborns are not perfect, and it's important to capture their unique qualities and characteristics. It is my personal style to not edit out skin flakes unless requested. I do edit for skin discoloration due to jaundice or circulation issues. It's important to remember that every baby and every family is unique, and it's important to find a photographer who understands and respects your needs and preferences. |
