When planning what to wear for your newborn portrait session, there are a few things to keep in mind: Coordinating colors: It's best to choose coordinating colors for the family members that will be in the photos. The colors should complement each other and the background of the photos. Avoid bold patterns or logos as they can be distracting. Simple and classic: Simple and classic clothing styles are best for newborn portraits. Avoid trendy or overly fashionable clothing, as they may look dated in a few years. Stick to neutral and solid colors, and avoid bright neon colors or loud prints. Comfort: Comfort is important, especially for the newborn. Dress the baby in comfortable and soft clothing, and make sure that the clothing is not too tight or restrictive. If you're wearing something uncomfortable, it shows in your photos. Textures: Textures can add interest and depth to the photographs. Consider incorporating different textures in your clothing, such as knit sweaters or denim jeans. Accessories: Accessories such as jewelry, scarves, or hats can add a personal touch to the photos. Be mindful that they don't overpower the photos. Don't overdo it, less is more. Layers: Layers can add dimension and interest to the photos. Consider incorporating layers in your clothing, such as a cardigan or a scarf. It's a good idea to have a few options of clothing ready for the session, so the photographer can help you decide what will look best in the photographs. Remember, the focus should be on the baby and family, so don't go for anything too flashy or distracting. Hi there Mama! I'm Jessica, a Utah based new born baby photographer. It is best to book newborn photos within the first two weeks after birth. This is because babies are most sleepy and pliable during this time, making it easier to achieve the adorable, curled-up poses that are typical of newborn photography. Additionally, the earlier in the baby's life that the photos are taken, the less chance there is of the baby developing any blemishes or baby acne, which can be distracting in photographs.
It's important to book your newborn photography session in advance (ideally during pregnancy) so that your preferred photographer can reserve a spot for you and be prepared for the session. This way, you don't have to worry about finding a photographer after the baby is born and can focus on the most important thing, your new baby. It's also important to keep in mind that the photographer's schedule may fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons, so it's a good idea to book your session well in advance to secure your spot and avoid disappointment.

âFor more information and advice on becoming a new parent subscribe by submitting your information below: This time on the blog I thought I'd share some basic tips on how to prepare yourself, your baby, and your home for a newborn portrait session. Some of these tips apply to newborn sessions that take place in a studio, but most are catered to newborn portrait sessions that take place from the comfort of your own home. Choose a reputable photographer: Research and choose a reputable newborn photographer who has experience with newborns and can provide a safe and comfortable environment for your baby. Make sure they only do safe poses with the babies they photograph. Scheduling the session: Schedule the session within the first two weeks of your baby's life, when they are still very sleepy and easy to pose. Even if your baby has already been born it's not too late to try and find a photographer. Ask around for recommendations if your preferred photographer is fully booked. Prepare your home: Before the photographer arrives, prepare your home by cleaning and tidying up the room where the session will take place. This room is usually the one with the most window/natural light but connect with your photographer to see what type of lighting they prefer. Baby's clothing: Dress your baby in simple, comfortable clothing that won't interfere with the poses. Avoid clothes with snaps or buttons that can be uncomfortable for the baby. Bring props: Bring any props or special items you would like to include in the photos, such as a special blanket, stuffed animal, or family heirlooms. Check with your photographer to see if there are any limits or restrictions on props. Feed your baby: Make sure your baby is well-fed and has a full tummy before the session to avoid fussiness or discomfort during the shoot. Plan for feeding and diaper changes: Be prepared for feeding and diaper changes during the session, and make sure you have everything you need on hand. Be flexible: Be prepared for the unexpected, as newborns can be unpredictable. Be flexible and try to go with the flow during the session. Take care of yourself: Make sure to get enough rest and take care of yourself before the session. Having a well-rested and relaxed parent will make the session go more smoothly. By following these tips, you can help to prepare for a successful and enjoyable newborn portrait photography session. It's also important to keep in mind that babies are unpredictable, so it's best to go with the flow and not stress too much about perfection. The most important thing is to capture the beautiful memories of your newborn as they were when they were brand new in the world.
It is generally recommended to book a maternity portrait session between 28-36 weeks of pregnancy, as this is when the baby bump is most prominent and the mother is likely to feel the most comfortable. This also allows for enough time to schedule the session and make any necessary arrangements before the baby is born. However, it ultimately depends on individual preference and the availability of your photographer. This was a brief topic this week so I've decided to give you a little bonus question on how to choose a great photographer for documenting your pregnancy with portraiture.
What are some questions a pregnant mom should ask when booking a photographer for a maternity session?
Hi there, I'm Jessica and I'm a traveling newborn photographer in Utah County. When I started specializing in newborns I traveled to my clients' homes and even though I've had several opportunities to have a studio I've found that I prefer to go to the homes of these newborn babies. Why? Because I remember what it's like to have a brand new baby and I want to make your life easier. It's a struggle to get everything that you need out the door. The baby might get hungry on the way to a studio, they might have a diaper blowout. You might forget something. If your photographer comes to you instead then all of those issues are solved. I wanted to take some time in this post to answer some questions about what I do as Utah Valley's best traveling photographer. What is a traveling newborn photographer? A traveling newborn photographer is a professional photographer who specializes in newborn photography and is willing to travel to clients' homes or other locations to take photographs of their newborns. This is in contrast to a studio-based newborn photographer, who typically works out of a fixed location and requires clients to come to them. Why should I hire a traveling newborn photographer? Traveling newborn photographers can provide a more convenient and comfortable experience for new parents, as they can come to the client's home and take photographs of the baby in the familiar and comfortable surroundings. This can be especially helpful for parents who have just had a baby and are adjusting to the new routine and responsibilities. The photographer can bring the necessary equipment and props to the client's home, allowing for a more personalized and intimate experience. How does this work? I provide a hassle-free experience by bringing my studio equipment to your home. During newborn sessions, I will bring an array of props, adorable outfits, charming accessories, backgrounds, posing accessories, professional lighting equipment, and my high-quality camera. Together, we will capture priceless memories in the comfort of your own home. Check out the video below to see what my setup looks like when I photograph your baby. |
